The koru (Māori for "loop") is a spiral shape design theme based on the shape of a new unfurling New Zealand Silver Fern frond leaf sprouting opening and symbolizing new beginnings, growth, strength and peace. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement and an inner coil suggests the return to a point of origin.
